After ceding the top spot to NBC’s Today in the adults 25-54 demographic for two weeks in a row, ABC’s Good Morning America reclaimed its position as the top morning show during the opening week of the 2022-2023 broadcast season.
GMA was also the top show in total viewers, and the only one to register week-to-week growth in both demos for the week of Sept. 19.
The first week of the new season also featured a new first for GMA as it led in adults 25-54 for the first time in 8 years — since the 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 seasons, respectively.
According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, GMA averaged 3.121 million total viewers and 751,000 viewers in the adults 25-54 demo. When compared to the previous week, GMA grew by +4% in total viewers and by +5% in adults 25-54.
When looking at the morning show’s performance to the same week in 2021, it saw declines in both total viewers and the adults 25-54 demo at -6% and -3%, respectively.
After being buoyed by the continuous coverage surrounding the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the Today show fell back to the No.2 position in both total viewers and adults 25-54.
The NBC morning show averaged 2.785 million total viewers and 719,000 adults 25-54 viewers for the week of Sept. 19. When compared to the previous week, Today dropped by -1% in total viewers but remained flat in the adults 25-54 demo. Compared to the same week in 2021, the Today show is down -14% in total viewers and -21% in adults 25-54.
CBS Mornings had 2.41 million total viewers and 501,000 adults 25-54 viewers for the week of Sept. 19. It remained flat in total viewers but saw a -1% decline in the adults 25-54 demo when compared to the previous week. Looking at the same week in 2021, CBS Mornings is down -1% in total viewers but continues to show positive momentum in the adults 25-54 demo, growing by +1%
