
ABC’s Good Morning America not only averaged the largest total audience on morning TV this past week (3.4 million viewers), but the program averaged more adults 25-54 than its NBC and CBS competition, based on Nielsen data for the week of May 2. That’s rare.
With an 815,000 adults 25-54 average, GMA won the week in the key A25-54 demo for the first time in over four months and led its NBC rival in the measurement by its largest margin (+47,000) in over six years—since the weeks of Dec. 27, 2021 and Dec. 21, 2015, respectively. Additionally, GMA ranked No. 1 in the key demo all five days of the week for the first time since the week of April 27, 2015, based on regular telecasts.
It’s not a stretch to say we saw this coming. After all, GMA won the key A25-54 demo on Monday and Friday of the previous week (April 25 and 29).
So, how did GMA fare relative to the previous week? The broadcast gained +6% in total viewers and +8% among adults 25-54, turning in its largest A25-54 average since in eight weeks. Relative to the year-ago week (May 3, 2021) , ABC’s morning show gained +2% in average total viewers, but shed -4% among adults 25-54.
NBC’s Today fell to second place in an A25-54 measurement it traditionally dominates. The broadcast averaged 768,000 A25-54 viewers this past week, which is -2% from what it hauled in the previous week. The NBC morning show also averaged 2.96 million total viewers for the week, which is actually +1% from the previous week. Relative to the year-ago week, Today fell -7% in total viewers and lost -17% of its A25-54 audience.
CBS Mornings averaged 2.44 million total viewers for the week of May 2, up +1% from the prior week, but -12% from the year-ago week. CBS Mornings also averaged 547,000 000 adults 25-54, which is up a solid +15% from the prior week but still -6% from the year-ago week.
