Walton: CNN & HLN Don’t Need To Be “Complementary,” Because We Have Pipeline

By Brian

In a Q&A with David Lieberman, CNN News Group president Jim Walton says: “Headline News’ strategy in prime time will be defined as smart, engaging, intelligent, opinionated people — and give them a platform to engage with their audiences. CNN will stick with a more traditional format of doing news and information.” He finally explains his answer to this:

Q: Is Headline News the channel that you’ll use to deal with Fox while CNN does its thing?

A: Sure, let’s go after Fox. Why not?

Q: You said last year that if there’s a talk show on Headline News, there’ll be news on CNN. But Beck will be on at the same time as Larry King.

A: But we have CNN Pipeline now. We have a broadband channel that is up, and there is news on it. We felt comfortable that we’re doing our job in making sure that anybody who wants news at any time day or night anywhere in the world can get it on one of our services.

Q: Pipeline’s on a par with your cable channels?

A: Well, it’s nascent, it’s new. But, sure. While there aren’t as many viewers of our broadband content right now, it is a huge area of growth for us. It’s growing exponentially for us.
