V&W Day One: Notes & Quotes

By Brian

> “The title card for WNT simply says the show’s title and does not say ‘…with [anchor names].’ However, it was announced as ‘…with Bob Woodruff and Elizabeth Vargas,’ meaning his name comes first,” an e-mailer says.

> AP: “Both anchors stuck strictly to the news, neither acknowledging it was their first day on the new job.”

> Verne Gay: “To anyone who’s spent years, or just the last year, watching Woodruff, it could have been just another day at the office for this guy. He’s always good, and last night suggested nothing to the contrary. And then, Vargas. She was fine, too. She smiled at the right times, and frowned at the right times, spoke clearly, and so on…”

> BCBeat: “It looks like big spotlights are aimed at Vargas, who seems lit up like one of those blow-up Christmas ornaments that just last week made us feel so un-holiday-like.”

> AP again: “With Vargas standing behind a glass desk in ABC’s New York studio and Woodruff on a street in Iran, the two had little interaction.”

> One e-mailer’s review: “New WNT: comprehensive, solid newscast with ugly new graphics. Woodruff and Vargas were both at their best.”

> Vargas’ sign-off: “For all of our team around the world, have a good evening and a good night.”

> Update: 2:34am: Scott asks: “Did anyone else notice an emphasis of the ‘World’ in World News Tonight — their graphics, use of maps, ‘for all of our team around the world’?”
