  When Katie Couric departed as co-host of Today in May, frowns dominated the brows of the NBC bean counters.

Would the loss of Couric endanger the popularity of the network’s morning cash cow?

There was fear that ABC’s Good Morning America – which had been making intermittent audience ratings runs for morning network supremacy – would greatly benefit from Couric’s departure.

Even the signing of [Meredith] Vieira, while producing public smiles from network executives, didn’t diminish inner worries.

The smiles are for real now.
