St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Gail Pennington poses questions without answers: “Will two heads in fact be better than one? Or will reinventing the network news require more dramatic steps?”

“Maybe just a few tweaks, such as a male-female anchor duo, will turn out to be all it takes to hold the line against sliding viewership,” she says. “Or maybe major reinvention will in fact be necessary. As CBS boss Les Moonves joked when discussing Rather’s eventual replacement: ‘We’re almost starting from ground zero. Anything can happen. We may bring in the cast of Friends.'”
