Today & GMA Share Daytime Emmy

Today and Good Morning America, two of the fiercest competitors on television, are sharing an Emmy.

The broadcasts tied in a new “morning programming” category at last week’s Daytime Emmy Awards. Here’s the list of winners.

“…As someone who has won/tied a few Sports Emmys, I can tell you that one forgets the tie and remembers the honor and a great piece of hardware,” Today EP Jim Bell wrote in a memo over the weekend congratulating the staff on 600 weeks of wins. Click continued to read the full memo…

“This past week we marked our 600th consecutive week as the number one morning show in America, simply an unprecedented streak. To give this some context, no other such run in the history of morning television lasted 300 weeks.

And we were honored Thursday night by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with an Emmy award for a new category honoring excellence in Morning Television Programming. We tied with another morning show but as someone who has won/tied a few Sports Emmys, I can tell you that one forgets the tie and remembers the honor and a great piece of hardware.

As I’ve noted in the past, this show does not allow much time for reflection. We’re all very busy working on upcoming segments, planning the summer, dreaming up big series for the fall, thinking about the ’08 election & Beijing Olympics, figuring out our digital future, moving our offices, and deciding what 7a will look like for Monday. And we do it all in the most competitive arena in television.

But we should all take a brief moment to celebrate the streak and this award before we again go out and do what we do best: honor the legacy of this amazing program by putting on the best morning show every single day this week. This show is the ultimate ensemble team effort and everyone shares in its success… many, many thanks to all and congratulations.”
