“This is Nancy Grace’s World, We Just Live In It” — & Other “Real Time” Ranting

By Brian

Bill Maher is pissed off about cable news, and he ranted on HBO’s “Real Time” on Friday night. Here’s the back and forth between Maher, Richard Belzer and Andrew Breitbart:

MAHER: Thank you Andrew for coming in on very short notice. We had Joe Scarborough booked for your position, but MSNBC said Joe you have to come in to cover this situation in Atlanta. Now I watched cable news all day today. It was nothing but this thing in Atlanta. Yesterday was nothing but Michael Jackson in his pajamas. Today it is just this story, which is not a big story! These news cable organizations, they have as much to do with news as MTV has with showing videos. I’m sorry, but showing this one incident in Atlanta all day, when lots of things [are] going on, is bullshit.

BREITBART: I will accept your premise that it’s an absurd story, but also understand that Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite never covered a 24/7 news cycle. Have you ever tried to do it? It is absurd to try to go to bankruptcy reform on a 24-hour basis.

MAHER: Excuse me, there’s lots of important things going on in the world this day and yesterday and none of them were covered because yesterday was just Michael Jackson in his pajamas and today was just some nut in Atlanta. It should have been a three minute story.

[APPLAUSE]
BREITBART: And these stories make comedy writers rich —

MAHER: Is that the job of a news station? To make comedy writers rich?

BREITBART: It’s also not to take the world that seriously —

MAHER: When you say you’re a news channel?

BREITBART: In a 24/7 news cycle, it’s hard to take everything like it’s the middle east peace process…This is Nancy Grace’s world, we just live in it.

MAHER: I don’t know who that is and I don’t know what you’re talking about.

BREITBART: She’s actually the star — Nancy Grace is the star of CNN right now.
