On Wednesday, September 5, ABC News’ “Good Morning America” celebrates its one year anniversary with the on-air anchor team of Diane Sawyer, Robin Roberts, Chris Cuomo and Sam Champion. Over the past year, “Good Morning America” has continued to be the morning program on the story – no matter where news breaks -“GMA” is there. Its team has traveled around the globe to breaking news stories, including: the continuing war in Iraq; disastrous weather situations around the country; Iowa and Louisiana for town hall meetings with presidential candidates and the tragic school massacre at Virginia Tech. From North Korea, to Syria, to Iran, to Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia – Diane Sawyer continues to be the anchor on the story before anyone else. This past year, Sawyer was the only American journalist to report live from inside these countries and conduct exclusive interviews with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; Bashar al-Assad of Syria; Afghanistan’s president Hamid Karzai and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal. Sawyer also traveled to New Orleans to host a town hall meeting with Democratic presidential candidate and former senator John Edwards and had exclusive interviews with former President Bill Clinton and former First Lady Nancy Reagan as well as all 16 women of the United States Senate and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Co-anchor Robin Roberts also continues to bring viewers in-depth reports on rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. On the second anniversary of the storm, Roberts returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and toured the area by helicopter to see firsthand the enormity of the storm’s aftermath. In addition to her Katrina reporting, Roberts has conducted exclusive interviews with Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Roberts reported live from Chicen Itza, Mexico where she scaled the Mayan Pyramids as part of “GMA”‘s “7 New Wonders of the World” series. Roberts also traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to conduct a live town hall meeting with Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY). (“Good Morning America” continues to extend invitations to all the leading Democrat and Republican candidates to participate in their own town hall.)
Sam Champion is the weather anchor who is out in the field more than anyone else. Since joining “GMA,” Champion has logged more than 90,000 miles on the road. From wildfires in California to massive flooding in Ohio – and hurricanes in Mexico – Sam Champion is there bringing ABC News viewers up-to-the-minute reports on weather situations across the globe. In addition to his weather reporting, Champion continues on “the green beat,” with weekly “Just One Thing” reports with information on how we as a country can be more energy efficient. In 2006, Champion traveled to Paris for the global warming report that was released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He also reported live from The Polar Ice Caps as part of “GMA”‘s “7 New Wonders of the World” series.
Since joining the morning news broadcast, Chris Cuomo has reported from the field on various breaking news stories for “GMA” His travels have taken him to Enterprise, Alabama, after devastating tornadoes touched down in that part of the country to Virginia Tech in the aftermath of the worst school shooting in America’s history and Minneapolis, Minnesota after one of the city’s main bridges collapsed. In January of 2007, Cuomo traveled to Iraq for a week of live reports from the war zone.
Since the current “GMA” anchor team debuted on the air, “Good Morning America” has continued to perform strongly against its competition. For the 2006-2007 season, “GMA” ranks #1 in seven of the top 11 markets around the country, including: Los Angeles; Chicago; Philadelphia; Dallas; Atlanta; Houston and Detroit. Also comparing September of 06 vs Sept 05, in the W35-49 demo, “GMA” beat the competition by 40,000 viewers. In addition, in the demo of W65+ “GMA” outperformed NBC’s “Today” by an average of 20,000 viewers. Year to date, “GMA” is up double digits (16%) in the A18-34 category and 8% in W 18-34.
