Telemundo to Produce Two Hispanic Daily News Programs For Mobile Video Content Platform Quibi

Quibi is tapping a second NBCUniversal news brand to produce daily news programming for its mobile-first live content platform, set to launch April 2020.

Hispanic media juggernaut Telemundo announced today that its news division is partnering with Quibi on two Hispanic news shows for the platform’s curated news and entertainment programming vertical, Daily Essentials.

The two daily news programs produced by Noticias Telemundo will include a “hard” news show, and an entertainment news show. Both will be produced in English at the network’s global headquarters, Telemundo Center in Miami.

“Telemundo’s partnership with Quibi is a great example of our company’s commitment to continue innovating and providing multi-platform news content to our growing audience at a time when they need it most,” NBCU Telemundo Enterprises and NBCU International Group chairman Cesar Conde said in a statement. “Our viewers are young, bilingual, and ambicultural – 50,000 Hispanics in the U.S. are turning 18 every month.”

Both Telemundo shows for Quibi will run for roughly five-to-six minutes, as is true with all previously-announced Quibi news programming.

The traditional news show will bring Quibi’s audience the top headlines and stories reflecting Hispanic perspectives from a new generation of identities in the U.S.: bilingual and bicultural. These shows will be produced by Noticias Telemundo.

The other show is a five-minute rundown of the day’s biggest entertainment news. Aimed at today’s multicultural viewers, the show will provide Quibi’s audiences with a daily dose of what’s popular right now, through the lens of the Hispanic shift influencing today’s pop culture.

In theory, the partnership makes sense. More than two-thirds of Hispanics are under the age of 34, and amongst streamers, Hispanics stream 25% more on mobile devices than the general market, according to a Telemundo study.

“At Quibi, our goal is to create content that reflects the diverse generation of millennials who are redefining culture and consuming media in entirely new ways,” said Quibi founder and board chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg. “We are excited about our groundbreaking partnership with Telemundo to create a new format for news to reach a growing bilingual and bicultural audience.”

This is Quibi’s fourth partnership with a major news otulet. Just two days ago, the service announced a partnership with CBS News on a 60 Minutes-themed weekly news show. BBC Global News announced last month that it would produce a daily international news show for the platform.

Telemundo’s sibling brand NBC News was the first network to announce a partnership Quibi on a twice-daily news show, which will feature hosts, along with dedicated correspondents, to go with a custom-built studio at 30 Rock.
