Sunday Show Ratings: February 12

By A.J. Katz

Sunday-AM-Anchors_061015_640White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller was the talk of the town this past Sunday as a result of his appearances on ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX’s Sunday shows. Some shows produced year-over-year ratings growth, perhaps as a result of his appearance, while others didn’t.

NBC’s Meet the Press with Chuck Todd came out the victor across the board for the 4th consecutive week. Not only did MTP win the week across the board, but it was the sole Sunday public affairs show to post year-over-year audience growth in multiple categories. In addition to Miller, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) also appeared on the program.

Meet the Press improved +6 percent in total viewers and +8 percent in the news demo from the Sunday last year (Feb. 14, 2016). An additional 1.821 million total viewers and 397,000 adults 25-54 watched MTP through re-runs on MSNBC.

CBS’ Face the Nation moderated by John Dickerson saw double digit declines from the same Sunday last year, -16 percent in total viewers and -28 percent in the key news demo. FTN dominated on Feb. 14, 2016, which was the day after Dickerson had hosted a GOP debate.

ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos ranked No. 2 in the news demo this past week, and No. 3 in total viewers. The program delivered +1 percent year-over-year growth in total viewers, but was -7 percent in viewers from the news demo. All in all, This Week is drawing its largest overall audience in 18 years and its strongest news demo performance in 8 years – since the 1998-99 and the 2008-09 seasons, respectively.

Fox News Sunday hosted by Chris Wallace posted double digit declines from the same Sunday last year, -13 percent in total viewers and -18 percent in the news demo. Sen. Sanders appeared on the program that Sunday, which gave FNS its best performance in the demo in 2 years. The trio of cable replays at 2 p.m., 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. ET combined for 3.37 million total viewers and 755,000 A25-54. Altogether, the episode posted close to 5 million total viewers and 1.24 million adults 25-54.

It was another big Sunday for Al Punto. The Jorge Ramos-hosted public affairs program posted its second highest audience level of the broadcast season to-date, and increased its total audience from the same Sunday in 2016 by +13 percent. The episode also posted year-over-year growth in the demos, including +30 percent growth among millennials. Additionally, Al Punto defeated Fox News Sunday for the 3rd consecutive week among Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.

Note: Face the Nation’s second half-hour was broadcast contiguously across 59.8 percent of the CBS affiliates.
