“She’s Not Like Bob Schieffer. Who’s More Like Bob Schieffer? Charlie Gibson Is.”

Katie Couric isn’t going anywhere, former CBS News President Andrew Heyward said at a media conference in Manhattan on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Despite what some critics have suggested, Heyward said it was far too early for CBS to abandon the effort.”

Here is Heyward’s theory about the shifting evening news ratings: “People who liked Bob Schieffer said, ‘She’s not like Bob Schieffer. Who’s more like Bob Schieffer? Charlie Gibson is.’ So they switched.”

> Update: 12:25pm: An e-mailer writes: “When the other networks were bringing out their Chief Washington Correspondents for analysis after the Bush news conference, I wonder why CBS didn’t have Bob Schieffer. Is the relationship between them really THAT strained?”
