Royals Announcer Splittorff Battling Cancer

By Cam Martin

Paul Splittorff, who won 166 games for the Kansas City Royals and has served as a Royals broadcaster since his career ended in 1984, is battling two types of cancer, the Kansas City Star reports.

The 64-year-old has both oral cancer and melanoma, the paper said.

He often exhibited slurred speech over the last two years, and his workload was steadily reduced by Fox Sports Kansas City, which holds the Royals’ broadcasting rights. He always characterized the problem as a temporary condition resulting from a virus.

His family confirmed the diagnosis in a statement to respect his privacy, according to the paper.
