The Aug. 22 issue of Newsweek explores lung cancer and includes an appreciation by Jonathan Alter.
Alter is blunt in his description of Jennings’ addiction: “He began coughing and feeling fatigued last fall, but was not diagnosed until March. His cancer was inoperable, though he tried chemotherapy and experimental radiation.”
And he concludes: “After all the old video deteriorates, Peter Jennings will be remembered most for two things: standing up for international reporting and driving home the risks of smoking. Each, in its own way, has the power to save people’s lives. He did, and he will.”
