The clear winner on the broadcast networks was NBC — the “only network news division to get its principal news anchor on the air,” an e-mailer says. “When it is a knock-down, drag-out for evening news supremacy, what made two presidents of news believe not having their main guy in the anchor chair was okay?” (Meanwhile, Brian Williams is now flying to Rome.)

As an insider said this evening: “This is a seminal moment in history for news. If one of the key faces of ABC News can’t muster up the energy to anchor, they might as well get out of the news business.”
