How the Network Evening Newscasts Reported Caitlyn Jenner’s Debut

The sensational social media debut of Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, in the form of a Vanity Fair cover image shot by Annie Leibovitz, was given prominent play by the network evening newscasts–each broadcast included Jenner in headlines, but none of them opened with the story.

The networks all pushed the story to the second block, with NBC Nightly News out of the break first, at 6:46 p.m. Nightly aired a package by correspondent Stephanie Gosk.

ABC, which drew nearly 17 million viewers for Diane Sawyer‘s exclusive Bruce Jenner interview–billed as Jenner’s last as “Bruce”–led the newscast with flooding along the East Coast, and got to Jenner’s new name and look at 6:47 p.m.


Amy Robach packaged the story, and David Muir teased ahead to a GMA interview Tuesday with the writer of the Vanity Fair profile of Jenner.

The CBS Evening News also led the broadcast with severe weather and the connection to climate change, and covered Jenner at 6:48, with a Michelle Miller package.
