Scott Pelley, David Muir and Savannah Guthrie are en route to South Carolina to anchor their newscasts from Charleston tonight, following the shooting spree at the Emanuel AME church last night. Guthrie has been filling in for the vacationing Lester Holt on Nightly News this week.
For the morning shows, Atlanta-based Steve Osunsami reported for Good Morning America, DC-based Jeff Pegues reported for CBS This Morning and Chris Jansing was on the ground for the Today show. Jansing, who is NBC’s senior White House correspondent, had traveled to the state last night planning to cover the Jeb Bush campaign. Bush canceled his events and Jansing’s plans changed when the news broke last night. NBC’s Ron Allen and Craig Melvin are also heading to Charleston.
The shooting suspect, who is still on the loose, has been identified as 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof. Update: Roof was taken into custody around 11 a.m. in North Carolina.
