NBC to Produce Prime-Time Special on Obama Legacy

By Chris Ariens

As the Senate begins confirmation hearings this week for Pres.-elect Donald Trump‘s cabinet, Barack Obama will give his presidential farewell address.

NBC’s Lester Holt will interview Pres. Obama on Air Force One tomorrow en route to Chicago where the president will deliver his final speech. Parts of the interview will air this week on NBC News programs with a one-hour special Friday night at 10 p.m. ET.

This is Holt’s second interview with Pres. Obama. The first was in the fall of 2015. Meanwhile, NBC’s Chris Jansing finishes up her tour at the White House with a slew of interviews with Obama officials including Press Secretary Josh Earnest, Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes and First Lady Michelle Obama’s chief of staff Tina Tchen. Those will air all week on MSNBC.

NBC News also has a tradition, going back almost 50 years, where it takes viewers inside a new president’s White House. Brian Williams featured Pres. Obama in the spring of 2009. It was NBC’s seventh installment of the Inside the White House series. We’ve reached out to NBC News about whether they intend to reach out to the team Trump for the 2017 version. We’ll update when we hear back.
