NBC Newsers Detained in Nepal For Using Drone (Video)

By Brian Flood

Police in Nepal were not messing around today when an NBC News crew, along with a freelance drone operator, attempted to use a drone during coverage of the aftermath of April’s earthquake and aftershocks. NBC News correspondent Katy Tur was shooting video and stand-ups from Kathmandu when police interrupted, briefly detained and questioned the crew. And it was all caught on video from a bystander (below).

The crew was not arrested or fined and the drone was eventually returned. The team quickly got back to work and Tur reported live on the Today show (without drone footage).

The Nepalese government has cracked down on the use of drones used to cover the aftermath of the massive earthquake. Drone operators need permission from the country’s aviation authority to do so.
