NBC News Producer Aboard Derailed Amtrak Train: ‘I’m Operating on Shock’

By Mark Joyella

Janelle Richards is an NBC News producer who works on “NBC Nightly News.” She was headed back to New York aboard the Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday night. She survived the fatal crash, and told “Today” host Matt Lauer she’s physically fine, but “operating on shock.”

Richards–who frequently rides Amtrak between Washington and New York–said the crash happened “in an instant.” She found herself “flying up” out of her seat and than falling back down.

While Richards was unhurt, others in her train car were less fortunate, including one woman Richards approached who was covered in blood–but able to evacuate.
