NBC News Digital Hires Reuters Supreme Court Correspondent Lawrence Hurley as Supreme Court Reporter

By A.J. Katz

NBC News Digital has hired a new Supreme Court reporter: Reuters’ Lawrence Hurley.

Based out of Washington, Hurley has been Reuters’ Supreme Court correspondent, covering the top stories on the legal affairs beat, over the past nine years.

While at Reuters, he was part of the team of reporters who won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for the close examination of the legal doctrine qualified immunity—which helps shield police from excessive force claims. Long before it became a sticking point in Congress as lawmakers negotiated police reform, their series showed how the Supreme Court has shaped the doctrine to make it harder to hold police accused of using excessive force accountable.

Hurley will lead Digital’s coverage of notable cases while reporting on the court and its justices. He’ll also work closely with Kelly O’Donnell, now covering SCOTUS for NBC News linear platforms after the exit of Pete Williams.
