MSNBC’s Take on Fake News Backfires

By Chris Ariens

Here’s a new and disturbing take on fake news.

Tuesday morning, MSNBC’s Craig Melvin reported on the trend of made-up news stories, pointing out one site that is propagating the trend. It is a ripoff of ABC News filled with fake stories with headlines like, “Obama Signs Executive Order Declaring Investigation Into Election Results” and “Obama Signs Executive Order Banning The National Anthem At All Sporting Events Nationwide.”

But where MSNBC failed, here, is that they used the real ABC News logo, leaving some viewers to assume the real ABC News reported these fake stories.

Insiders tell us the mistake was noticed relatively quickly, because later, during Kate Snow‘s hour, MSNBC changed the graphic using the fake ABC logo. “This is clearly not ABC News, but it’s such a good mock-up, it looks real,” Snow said.
