MSNBC’s Chris Matthews: ‘I am not a birther. I am an enemy of the birthers’

By Molly Stark Dean

The birthers are back in the news. For those who have selectively forgotten who they are: Birthers think that President Barack Obama is not a legal US citizen. MSNBC host Chris Matthews brought up the issue on last night’s “Hardball.”

The newly-elected Hawaii Governor Neil Abercombie has brought the issue back. He’s on a mission to end the birther movement altogether.

On last night’s show, Matthews held up a so-called “long form” birth certificate and compared it to the shorter version Obama has released — “and to the birthers,” Matthews said, “is proof that he really ain’t one of us.”

“I am not a birther,” the MSNBC host said “I am an enemy of the birthers.”

An MSNBC spokesperson tells TVNewser, “no comment.”

Video from last night’s show with Matthews, upset by the percentage of people who still aren’t sure of Obama’s citizenship, is after the jump…
