Moving “From News To Views” Helps HLN

This NYT piece about HLN’s success transforming primetime “from news to views” reasks a well-worn question: How can the CNN networks “compete with the more opinionated prime-time competition… while preserving their reputation as objective news gatherers?”

The solution, according to Ken Jautz, is to treat HLN as the op-ed page, with CNN serving as objective news pages.

“The experiment is a success,” Noam Cohen writes. Glenn Beck “has increased the ratings in his 7 p.m. time period 60 percent among all viewers, and 84 percent among viewers aged 25 to 54.” Nancy Grace “has largely retained the triple-digit percentage increases in her time period from the year before.” HLN’s daytime ratings have grown 10 percent since 2004, while prime ratings are up 48 percent…
