Measure Katie’s Performance On 9/5/2007

“The real thing to watch isn’t how [Katie] Couric performs on Tuesday and her subsequent Nielsen score. It is what she is doing a year from Tuesday,” Brooke Barnes writes in Saturday’s WSJ.

Barnes wonders whether “CBS has finally figured out a way to lead the aging evening news programs out of their prolonged slump.” It’s a decades-old slump, and it’s continuing: “From Sept. 19, 2005, through Aug. 29, the total average audience for NBC’s ‘Nightly News’ has shrunk by about 530,000 people to 9.1 million; ABC’s ‘World News’ is down 810,000 people to 8.2 million. No. 3 CBS has seen a boost of 300,000 to 7.4 million…”
