Lost In Irene Madness: CNN Tracks Down Lockerbie Bomber in Libya

By Alex Weprin

CNN’s ace foreign correspondent Nic Robertson is in Libya, covering the aftermath of the battles that brought Tripoli into the hands of the rebels. Lost in the madness stateside surrounding Hurricane Irene was a brilliant bit of journalism, as Robertson tracked down the man convicted of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, or the Lockerbie Bomber, as he became known, was found by Robertson comatose and being fed via an IV drip in his Tripoli villa. After Tripoli fell, some news reports suggested that he had fled the country and was living a life of luxury in exile. As Robertson discovered, that was certainly not the case, although the transition government in Libya says that they would not be extraditing him to another country.
