Koppel Exits: The Final Chapter

By Brian

“Tonight, a Tuesday with Morrie,” Ted Koppel said at the beginning of his final Nightline.

“It was some time in the late winter of 1995 that Richard Harris, a longtime senior producer on this broadcast, brough an article in the Boston Globe to my attention. It was all about this retired sociology professor from Brandeis University.”

A crew traveled to Massachusetts to visit Morrie Schwartz. (Koppel told the story, in part, to note that “literally scores of producers over the years have taken rough ideas and sculpted them into brilliant work, for which I’ve received much of the credit.”)

The segments with Schwartz and Albom have been “perhaps the most popular series of broadcasts we’ve ever done,” Koppel said.

“So, since everything has to end somewhere, we thought we’d end this chapter of Nightline with Morrie and his biographer.”
