Kathy Frankovic To Retire From CBS News

By Chris Ariens

Kathy Frankovic says eight is enough — covering eight presidential elections as Director of Surveys for CBS News. “Ending anything can be sad,” she writes to colleagues, “but I am happy that I am able to leave at a time when I am still able to do new things, and to leave with the Election and Survey Unit in such great hands.”

Frankovic joined CBS in 1977. She is a co-author of “The Election of 1980” and “The Election of 1992,” and has published many articles on elections and public opinion. Frankovic also wrote the CBSNews.com blog Poll Positions.

Dear Friends,

For me, eight is enough. Eight presidential elections, that is.

Ending anything can be sad, but I am happy that I am able to leave at a time when I am still able to do new things, and to leave with the Election and Survey Unit in such great hands.

I have been incredibly lucky. Getting plucked from academia and coming to CBS in 1977 was something I couldn’t have planned when I started out. The stroke of luck gave me the opportunity to meet and work with wonderful and talented people on survey projects and for news events that both challenged me and made me better.

The notes my colleagues have sent me have brought back a lot of memories — mostly of great days. And in retrospect, even the bad days were good.

Thank you all for your kind words.

Many of you have asked if can visit us on the Big Island. Yes, you’re all invited. Just don’t all come at the same time!

I will of course miss everyone, but since I expect to be around as needed, I refuse to say goodbye. This is a time when two Hawaiian words are extremely appropriate. So I’ll just say mahalo — and aloha.

Best,
Kathy
