“In the movie ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,’ Christina Applegate’s character – Veronica Corningstone – longed for the day when she would be regarded as a serious journalist and not just a set decoration. As a broadcast journalist starting out in the 1970s, I had that dream, as well. But from the recent actions at ABC News, I suspect that day may not come for a long time,” Joanne Cronrath Bamberger wrote in Thursday’s Washington Examiner.
She says “ABC had a chance to tear down the final barrier for TV newswomen but failed miserably.” The network gave Elizabeth Vargas two substitute co-anchors when Bob Woodruff was injured, “as if its viewers confidence would be lost if Vargas sat behind the desk alone (which she did often while Jennings was ill and following his death).” More…
