Hurricane Dean: Network Broadcasts

By Chris Ariens

With the eye of Hurricane Dean just off the coast of Jamaica at news time, the three broadcast nets led off with expanded coverage of the category 4 storm.

In addition to correspondents in Jamaica and Mexico, NBC’s Lester Holt had the advantage of incorporating meteorologist Bill Karins of NBC’s digital weather channel, Weather Plus.

← On CBS, Russ Mitchell spoke with The Weather Channel‘s Mike Seidel who was reporting from Kingston.

On ABC, after reports from Jamaica and Mexico, anchor John Berman spoke with former National Hurricane Center director Max Mayfield, who now works for ABC’s Miami affiliate WPLG.

>Update from a tipster: “NBC’s Kerry Sanders and Mike Boettcher have moved to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. This would put them in position to be as close to where Dean’s eye is expected to cross.”
