How the News Media Use Twitter

By Chris Ariens

A new PEJ study takes a look at how mainstream news organizations use Twitter. Perhaps not surprisingly, most news organizations use the service to share links to their own content.

The study looked at more than 3,600 tweets from 13 news organizations over the course of a week last February. 93% of the Tweets include links back to their own sites. The other 7% included links to other news sites, non-news sites or did not include links at all. As for those news orgs that retweet others’ tweets — @foxnews leads the way:

Many of the outlets examined almost never retweeted content from their main feeds. Fox and MSNBC tweeted less overall, but they were far more likely than the other outlets to retweet content (44% of Fox’s tweets and 27% of MSNBC’s tweets were retweets).
