Here’s How TV News Is Covering Midterm Election Night 2022

Election Day is here, and television news organizations are covering tonight’s proceedings across more platforms than ever before — their traditional linear networks, their respective streaming news services and via digital and mobile platforms.

ABC

ABC News will deliver 2022 midterm elections coverage on Tuesday, Nov. 8 beginning at 7 p.m. ET on the ABC News Live streaming service, and at 8 p.m. ET on ABC TV.

World News Tonight anchor David Muir will lead coverage from New York starting at 7 p.m., with ABC News Live Prime anchor Linsey Davis, chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl, chief White House correspondent Cecilia Vega, chief global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz, senior White House correspondent Mary Bruce, Nightline co-anchor Byron Pitts, and contributors María Elena Salinas, Chris Christie, Donna Brazille, Heidi Heitkamp, Yvette Simpson and Sarah Isgur. 

“Be patient. Don’t jump to conclusions. One race that goes in an unexpected direction does not necessarily constitute a trend,” longtime ABC News special events chief (and the exec in charge of 2022 Election Night) Marc Burstein tells us.

CBS

CBS News and Stations will deliver live midterm elections coverage on Tuesday, Nov. 8. The CBS News’ America Decides: Campaign ‘22 election night special begins at 5 p.m. ET on CBS News Streaming and on CBS TV from 8-11 p.m. ET/PT, again from 11-11:35 p.m. ET for select CBS affiliates and continues from 12:37-2 a.m. ET live across all time zones.

CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell will anchor America Decides: Campaign ‘22 primetime coverage from the CBS News Election Headquarters at 1515 Broadway in Times Square with CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King; chief political analyst, anchor of Primetime with John Dickerson and senior national correspondent John Dickerson and Face the Nation moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan.

“For the first time since CBS News started broadcasting election nights in 1948, we will have a Democracy Desk in the studio to track all the challenges to American democracy,” CBS News election night boss David Reiter tells us.

Fox News

Fox News Channel will present special live coverage of the 2022 midterm elections Tuesday, Nov. 8 beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

Once again co-anchored by Special Report anchor Bret Baier and The Story anchor/managing editor Martha MacCallum, Democracy 2022: Election Night will provide viewers with the latest calls on House, Senate, and gubernatorial races, as well as projections on the balance of power in both the Senate and the House via the Fox News Decision Desk. Baier and MacCallum will be joined by America’s Newsroom co-anchor Bill Hemmer as he analyzes results in real-time on the electronic “Bill-board.” Faulkner Focus host Harris Faulkner will speak with a live audience of voters about the issues they feel strongest about in this election. Fox News Sunday moderator Shannon Bream will use a new, immersive touch screen to report on the Fox News Voter Analysis, a survey of early and Election Day voters conducted in all 50 states by NORC at the University of Chicago for Fox News and the Associated Press.

“As always, we will be focusing on constant communication between our decision desk, on-air talent and producers, as well as putting an emphasis on transparency, so the viewer knows exactly what’s going on at all times,” Fox News election night chief Alan Komissaroff tells us. “We want to educate viewers on how we are doing what we do… and why we are making a call or not.”

CNN

On Election night, CNN’s team of anchors, correspondents, analysts, and commentators will provide special coverage and report from across America on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper will kick off Election Night in America 2022 live from CNN’s Election Centers in Washington, DC, and New York, beginning at 4 p.m. ET. Joining them will be CNN chief political correspondent and anchor Dana Bash, along with CNN anchors Abby Phillip and Chris Wallace. CNN anchor and chief national affairs analyst Kasie Hunt will track the Senate races, and CNN anchor Boris Sanchez will be covering the gubernatorial races around the country. CNN anchor and chief national correspondent John King will return to the “Magic Wall,” providing viewers with election analysis and reporting on House races. CNN anchor John Berman will also report from the CNN Magic Wall, CNN reporter Harry Enten will give context on exit polls, and CNN political director David Chalian will provide analysis on exit polls. Additionally, CNN anchor Pamela Brown will provide voting updates across the country.

“This year, a team of producers behind CNN’s Magic Wall led by Pallavi Reddy developed new ways to explore the vast amounts of election data that come with a midterm election,” CNN special events programming boss Eric Sherling tells us. “Viewers can expect our on-air election team to dive even deeper into the closest races in the country in real time county by county. These more sophisticated tools will help viewers understand how Americans are voting in 2022, where outstanding votes are, and when they are expected to come in.”

PBS NewsHour

PBS NewsHour will offer live special coverage of the 2022 midterms on broadcast, online, and social beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 8.

NewsHour’s coverage will be anchored by managing editor Judy Woodruff, who will be joined by a panel of analysts and campaign strategists including New York Times op-ed columnist David Brooks, Washington Post columnists Gary Abernathy and Perry Bacon Jr., editor-in-chief of the Cook Political Report Amy Walter, former chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence Marc Short, and former campaign manager for Bernie Sanders for President Faiz Shakir.

“This year, more than ever, we are anticipating that some candidates and campaigns may deny the factual results and question the credibility of the vote count,” PBS NewsHour senior ep Sara Just tells us.

Bloomberg TV & Radio

Bloomberg will be simulcasting an election night special, Midterms 2022 on Bloomberg Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET on TV, Radio, and QuickTake, Bloomberg’s 24/7 streaming global news platform. The outlet will offer political commentary, breaking news, and an analysis of what it means for markets, the economy, and policies across various issues, and for the first time in 2022, coverage will originate from the company’s newly redesigned interactive studio in Washington, DC, with more breadth of coverage and analysis.

David Westin will anchor Bloomberg’s midterm election night special, and he’ll be joined in studio by Joe Mathieu, Kriti Gupta, Annmarie Hordern, Mario Parker, and Wendy Benjaminson throughout the evening.

We recently caught up with Bloomberg News political director Jodi Schneider, who told us, “For the first time in 2022, coverage will also come from our newly redesigned interactive studio in Washington, DC, with more breadth of coverage and analysis.”

Newsy (Scripps News)

E.W. Scripps Company’s national news network Newsy (rebranding as Scripps News on Jan. 1) will present live election night coverage from 6 p.m. – 1 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Based out of Atlanta, Newsy anchors Alex Livingston, Del Walters and Chance Seales, along with Newsy political director Andrew Rafferty, will report real-time midterm election results from 7 p.m.-midnight ET. Walters will host a 6 p.m. “pregame show,” while Seales will host a special hour-long edition of Newsy Tonight at 12 a.m. ET.

“We’ll report the results as we learn them—and we’ll be clear to the audience that we’ll report what we know, and what we don’t know,” the head of Newsy Eric Ludgood tells us. “Viewers will see an increased focus on the issues driving the vote, the economy, abortion, immigration, and education. Election security and integrity questions will be a prominent part of the coverage.”

Spectrum News

F0r the first time, the Spectrum News National team will provide updates and analysis on the races, including balance of power in Congress. National updates will air twice each hour and complement local election night coverage. Spectrum News’ digital-only markets – St. Louis, Maine and Hawaii – also will have comprehensive local coverage on the Spectrum News mobile app.

C-SPAN

C-SPAN’s live coverage of election night results and speeches from House, Senate and Governor races will begin Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on C-SPAN, C-SPAN Radio, C-SPAN.org and the C-SPAN Now app.

C-SPAN will take viewer calls and comments throughout the night, answering the rather straightforward question: “Who did you vote for and why?”

Election night coverage on C-SPAN will be hosted by Greta Brawner and Peter Slen. The Hotline managing editor Kirk Bado and The Cook Political Report senate and governors editor Jessica Taylor will join the live coverage to discuss U.S. House and Senate races driving the battle to control Congress.

NBCUniversal News Group

NBC News’ Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd, NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt and NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent/chief Washington correspondent Andrea Mitchell will anchor rolling coverage from New York beginning at 8 p.m. ET. on Tuesday, November 8. They’ll be joined by NBC News senior national correspondent and NBC News Now anchor Tom Llamas and NBC News senior Washington correspondent Hallie Jackson. Chief White House correspondents Peter Alexander and Kristen Welker will join from the White House reporting on the Biden administration’s reaction to the results.

Starting at 6 p.m. ET, MSNBC’s Rachel MaddowNicolle Wallace and Joy Reid will lead MSNBC’s Decision 2022 election coverage. They will be joined by Chris HayesAlex WagnerLawrence O’Donnell, Ari Melber and Stephanie Ruhle.

Steve Kornacki will be at the Big Board throughout the night to break down the latest polling, patterns and exit polls as the votes are tallied. Viewers can keep up with Kornacki and the behind-the-scenes action all night with the return of the Kornacki Cam streaming at MSNBC.com, @MSNBC on Twitter and on-air.

NBC News Now’s Decision 2022 coverage kicks off at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 8, with special coverage hosted by NBC News Now anchor and senior Washington correspondent Hallie Jackson and NBC News Now anchor and senior national correspondent Tom Llamas. NBC News Now’s coverage continues with a simulcast of NBC News’ Decision 2022 election special at 8 p.m. ET.

CNBC will air a special, Business on the Ballot, at 8 p.m. ET, anchored by the Squawk Box team– Becky QuickJoe Kernen and Andrew Ross Sorkin– which will focus on the elections’ potential impact on American businesses and investors. The one-hour program will cover the key economic issues facing voters with critical insights from CEOs, policymakers and market pros.

Telemundo’s Julio Vaqueiro, joined by Aranxta Loizaga, will anchor Noticias Telemundo’s continuous election coverage from Miami beginning at 9 p.m. ET through at least 3 a.m. ET. They will be joined by anchors Vanessa HaucJohana Suárez, Nacho Lozano and José Díaz-Balart and a team of correspondents, reporters, analysts and contributors bringing the latest news and analysis.

Peacock will livestream MSNBC’s live election coverage from Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. ET to Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 5 a.m ET. Peacock subscribers can also view NBC News’ live election coverage from Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. ET to Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 3 a.m. ET.
