“This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos has been named chief Washington correspondent for ABC News, David Westin announced today.
“In his new role, Mr. Stephanopoulos will oversee coverage of Congress, reporting on the top political and policy stories of the day as he continues to anchor This Week,” the press release says. Also, he will “report and anchor a primetime hour on America’s political divisions in the New Year.”
“The former top Clinton staffer has already been contributing news and analysis for election and other Washington stories to various ABC news broadcasts, so the stripe is essentially a recognition of the role he has developed over almost a decade at ABC News,” Broadcasting & Cable says.
Stephanopoulos joined ABC News in January 1997 as a news analyst for This Week after serving as senior advisor to President Clinton for policy and strategy.
