Evening News Ratings: Week of Aug. 13

By A.J. Katz

ABC World News Tonight with David Muir remains America’s most-watched evening newscast, averaging nearly 8 million total viewers for the week of August 13, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data.

With its Aug. 13 victory, ABC has now won the last 27 weeks in total viewers and 43 of the 47 weeks of the season in total viewers. Not only that, but World News Tonight stood as the only evening newscast to improve in total viewers vs. the comparable week in 2017.

But not all was positive from a ratings perspective. As was the case with its evening news competitors, World News posted year-over-year losses in the younger news demos, including -8 percent in A25-54.

NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt remained the second-most-watched evening newscast this past week, but ranked No. 1 among adults 25-54. Nightly managed to deliver its largest margin of victory over ABC in the A25-54 demo in 13 weeks. NBC Nightly News has defeated ABC World News Tonight in the demo 6 of the past 7 weeks, but  compared to the same week in 2017, Nightly was -10 percent in the demo, and -1 percent in total viewers.

The highlight of the week for Nightly News was Holt’s interview with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

The CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor continues to post the most significant year-over-year audience drop off of the three newscasts. CBS was -5 percent in total viewers and -14 percent in the key A25-54 demo this past week vs. the comparable week in 2017.
