Eric Avram To Oversee Law & Justice, Medical, Business Units At ABC

ABC says: “Eric Avram has been named Executive Editor of Specialized Units for ABC News, News President David Westin announced today.” He will oversee the law and justice, medical, and business units.

Westin says: “Eric brings to his new position experience working with all parts of ABC News and a proven track record in generating and producing compelling, distinctive reporting. These units, with our Investigative Unit, have already shown how we can do better reporting by bringing together groups with shared expertise. Under Eric, we expect the units’ contributions to grow even greater for all of ABC News.”

” Mr. Avram joined ABC News in 1993 and has been the Senior Producer of the Law and Justice Unit since 2002. During his tenure, Mr. Avram has created and developed award-winning, exclusive programming for all of ABC News’ platforms, including the prime time special on the explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia with Charles Gibson, a re-examination of the Central Park jogger rape case that made national headlines with Cynthia McFadden, and Diane Sawyer’s exclusive interview with Katherine Harris, the Florida Secretary of State at the center of the 2000 election recount controversy.


Recently, Mr. Avram developed and oversaw ABC News’ division-wide series on the bird flu. He also ran ABC’s “Election 2004″ ballot-watch initiative. As Senior Producer for the Law and Justice Unit, Mr. Avram and his staff have been responsible for providing exclusive reporting and stories to all ABC News’ programs on major trials, including 9/11 terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui, Martha Stewart, Kobe Bryant, Scott Peterson, and Michael Jackson.


Mr. Avram played a lead editorial role in ABC News’ coverage of major breaking news stories, including the 2000 presidential recount, the massacre at Columbine High School, the death of Princess Diana and the crash of TWA Flight 800. He also played significant roles in the Network’s coverage of the attacks on 9/11, for which he won a Peabody Award, Hurricane Katrina, and the assassination of Israeli Prime-Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He also produced and reported a death penalty series for “Nightline.”


Prior to joining ABC News, Mr. Avram was an attorney with the Wall Street law firm Hughes Hubbard and Reed. He received his law degree from Duke University and his bachelor’s degree from Brown University. Mr. Avram and his wife Lynne Greenberg, an English Literature professor at Hunter College, have two children, Benjamin, 11 and Lily, 8. ”
