Steve Friedman sent this message to the Early Show staff today:

“This morning, we suffered a very sad and very great loss. Our friend, our colleague, Gary Chern suffered a medical emergency while at work. He was attended almost immediately by staff members trained in CPR. He was transported by EMS to Roosevelt Hospital where he died. Our first thoughts, our greatest sympathies, go to his wife Cathy and daughter Caroline. Gary has been the rock and the soul behind our Hard News operation since 2002. His keen eye for tape, his calm in a hard news crash, his great ability to laugh at the end of a chaotic day.. are all parts of a person whom we will sorely miss. Gary came to CBS after years of distinguished work for NBC. Arrangements and information to share your thoughts and feelings with his family will follow.”

Chern was a coordinating producer for the show…
