David Westin has announced his latest reorganization efforts at ABC News. Kate O’Brian is now Senior Vice President for News, in charge of news gathering operations, including the Washington Bureau, NewsOne, ABC News Radio, and affiliate relations. An ABC spokesperson tells TVNewser that O’Brian’s job is a consolidation of responsibilities previously dispersed among other network execs.
O’Brian will report directly to Westin.
Westin has also named Mimi Gurbst as Senior Producer of World News with Charles Gibson, responsible for futures and features. The ABC spokesperson says the position had been empty for about one year, with rotating fill-ins.

I’m pleased to announce that Kate O’Brian will become Senior Vice President for News, responsible for our news gathering operations, the Washington Bureau, NewsOne, ABC News Radio, and affiliate relations. Kate has worked in several positions throughout the division, starting as a desk assistant with David Brinkley, spending time as a field producer overseas and a producer at World News Tonight, and ultimately working her way up to Vice President in charge of NewsOne. She is a strong leader and manager.
We will be posting a new position of Executive Editor under Kate. The Executive Editor will have direct oversight of all of our news gathering operations and oversee assignment of correspondents and crews. He or she will be charged with making sure that all of us are getting the information and the resources we need.
In the coming weeks, Kate and I will be working with all of you and with the new Executive Editor to fill in the details of our new news gathering structure. Some things will change; much will no doubt remain the same.
Much of our success in recent years has come because we have done better at sharing information and resources throughout the division. Now is the time to make sure that our structure reflects what we have largely come to do already. What we do today will help ensure that we lead the industry for the next 20 years. People — our audiences and we ourselves — roam across a widening range of outlets, which include television, radio, text-based Internet, broadband video, mobile, i-Pods, and who knows what else. One of our most important responsibilities is to provide a place for people to develop all of the skills they need to be journalists in this new environment.
