Couric Leaving CBS?: Still Buzzing

By SteveK

Katie Couric-watch Day 3 begins with a barrage of news and opinion about the topic. Highlights:

Bill Carter and Jacques Steinberg write in the New York Times about a February 28 meeting between Couric, her agent Alan Berger, CBS News president Sean McManus and CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves. “Couric discussed several things she might do if she left the anchor post, according to the executives, including a daily talk show to be syndicated by CBS, or replacing Larry King in a prime-time position on CNN,” reports the Times.

• The Los Angeles Times’ Matea Gold snags an on-the-record quote from CBS News national correspondent Byron Pitts about the possibility of a Couric early exit. “Is it possible? Most people would say it’s possible. People here read the news and also keep track of ratings, and they’re mindful that it’s the measure in this business.”

Richard Huff writes in the New York Daily News that although, “Couric is a terrific TV personality,” the, “high-priced experiment hasn’t succeeded on any level — as we told you it wouldn’t before she took the job — and it’s time for everyone to simply walk away and say it didn’t work.”

Andrew Tyndall of the go-to site for evening news news gives his take on the situation. “CBS News never needed an anchor to increase its audience; instead it needed an aggressive online strategy,” he writes.
