CNN’s Strategy: “Fewer, Longer Shows With More Recognizable Brands”

By Brian

When Jon Klein came to CNN eleven months ago, CNN had 14
distinct programs on its weekday schedule. By the end of November, the
lineup will be cut to nine. Daybreak, Inside Politics, Crossfire, Wolf
Blitzer Reports, and NewsNight have been sliced from the schedule.

Variety
says the latest shuffle “is part of a broad strategy to build the
network around fewer, longer shows with more recognized brands:
‘American Morning,’ ‘The Situation Room’ and now a later version of
‘Anderson Cooper 360.'”

The trade pub notes that “all three of those shows have undergone big changes since Klein took the helm of CNN/U.S. in November 2004, but none of them crack the top 10 cable news shows dominated by Fox News Channel.”
