CNN anchor Anderson Cooper has stepped in to help the Norfolk, Virginia Police Department outfit its entire K-9 unit with ballistic vests–just days after a Norfolk police dog was shot and killed in a standoff with a man barricaded in his house.
The Virginian-Pilot reports Cooper donated “enough money” to buy Kevlar vests similar to those used by military dog handlers–each costs about $2,200.
A retired Navy SEAL, Jimmy Hatch, who served as a military dog handler, launched a campaign to raise money to buy the vests. Cooper interviewed Hatch in 2009. Cooper “wasn’t keen on me publicizing his donation,” Hatch told the newspaper, “but I told him I was going to do it anyway. He’s such a good dude. And genuine.”
