CNN Reports From Zimbabwe Despite Journalist Ban

By SteveK

This afternoon on CNN, a reporter phoned in breaking news from Zimbabwe. And although she filed a six-minute report, her name was never mentioned once.

That’s because CNN, and other news organizations, were denied access to cover the elections in the country. But since CNN already had resources in Zimbabwe, they have been covertly covering the happenings on the ground.

CNN Newsroom anchor Don Lemon introduced the reporter, saying, “For security reasons, we are not identifying the reporter, but she joins us now by phone for the very latest.”

The reporter gave information about the election results, and the general mood on the streets. “Everyone is absolutely thirsty for information. If they believe…you have information, they will stop you on the street and ask you for that information,” she said. “A lot of their information, in fact, for anyone who can get their hands on it, is CNN.”

> Update: From a TVNewser tipster: “AJE has a reporter there, and apparently they’re not banned because the reporter (didn’t catch his name) was reporting in front of the Zimbabwe election commission offices. BBC also has a reporter there, and I just saw a report yesterday where they blurred the face of the male reporter.”
