CBS News announced two new assignments today: Andy Clarke is becoming deputy London bureau chief, replacing Laura Dubowski, who is becoming senior producer for special events.

Clarke had been a producer assigned to the London bureau since October 2000. Prior to that, he was based in Tokyo (1995-2000). In both positions, Clarke has worked for the CBS EVENING NEWS, specifically, since 1991. He has worked extensively in Iraq, both before the American occupation and after the ousting of President Saddam Hussein. Clarke’s other assignments have included the hunt for Osama bin Laden at Tora Bora in Afghanistan in 2001, the war in Sarajevo, the famine and U.S. military involvement in Somalia, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent changes throughout Eastern Europe, and the 1994 return of President Jean Bertrand Aristide to Haiti. He also covered the Gulf War from Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Clarke has produced coverage of the 1994 South African elections, the Middle East peace process, the 50th anniversary of D-Day, the Pan Am air disaster in Scotland and the neo-Nazi movement in Germany. He contributed to CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING. Prior to his Tokyo assignment, Clarke was a producer for the CBS EVENING NEWS weekend editions and the CBS News’ weekday morning program out of London. Also in that bureau, he was an assignment editor, a production coordinator and a news desk assistant, having joined CBS News in 1984. Clarke has won many awards, including the 2005 Overseas Press Club Award for best spot news coverage of the Pakistan earthquake and a 1996 Emmy Award for his reporting of the return to Vietnam of a group of Amerasian orphans. He was born in Chelmsford, Essex, Great Britain. Clarke and his wife have two sons.
Dubowski preceded Clarke as Deputy Bureau Chief, CBS News, London (2000-06), where she assisted in managing the editorial and logistical operations of the bureau. While there, she planned coverage of the death and funeral of Pope John Paul II and the election and inauguration of Pope Benedict XVI; organized and coordinated coverage of the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens and the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin; organized coverage of the tsunami from Sri Lanka and the death of Princess Diana; and helped plan CBS News’ coverage of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. She was a senior producer for THE EARLY SHOW and “CBS This Morning†(1998-2000), for which she supervised coverage of the millennium from Sydney, N.S.W., Australia, and the 2000 Iowa Caucuses and New Hampshire primary, among many other events. For “CBS This Morning,†she was in charge of daily coverage of all hard news and breaking stories. Before that, she was a broadcast producer for the program (1995-98). Dubowski also was a producer for the CBS MORNING NEWS and “CBS This Morning†(1993-95). Before that, she was executive producer (1991-93), a senior producer (1989-91) and a producer (1987-89) at WWOR-TV New York; a freelance news writer and field producer for WABC-TV New York (1985-86); an associate producer for “The American Parade†and “Crossroads†for CBS News (1984-85); and a producer and writer for Satellite News Channel in Stamford, Conn. (1982-83). Dubowski began her journalism career at WBZ-TV Boston, now a CBS Owned station, as a news writer, field producer, ENG coordinator, assistant director and stage manager (1975-82). She was born in Haverhill, Mass. Dubowski was graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in communications studies.
