Changes to CNN Newsroom

By SteveK

The Monday after the GOP convention (September 8) will bring a new daytime line-up for CNN Newsroom.

TVNewser has obtained an email from Scott Matthews to the CNN Newsroom Staff. Matthews was named director of programming in January.

Heidi Collins continues from 9-11amET, followed by Tony Harris 11am-1pmET. Kyra Phillips anchors from 1-3pmET and Rick Sanchez moves into the 3-4pmET role.

Don Lemon essentially swaps roles with Sanchez, and moves to anchor the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom.

The CNN Newsroom teams — mornings, afternoons, and weekends — are having a great year, growing in key dayparts and taking advantage of the many opportunities presented by this dynamic election year. As we look ahead to 2009 and think about ways to build on our success, we want to more fully tap into the strengths of our talented anchors and will be moving to a single-anchor format with dedicated show teams. This format will be consistent with the format we have in place throughout the evenings and in prime time.

Beginning September 8th, the daytime CNN Newsroom anchor line up will be as follows:

9a-11a — Heidi Collins

11a-1p — Tony Harris

1p-3p — Kyra Phillips

3p-4p — Rick Sanchez

Rick joins our weekday lineup following his great work on the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom. Don Lemon will become our prime-time weekend anchor for Newsroom, which allows his award-winning reporter talents to be used as a correspondent on the weekdays.

Heidi, Tony, Kyra, Rick and Don have all expressed enthusiasm for their assignments and the opportunities that come with them. And please know there will be no changes to the number of people involved with these broadcasts.

I look forward to working with each of you in implementing these exciting changes.
