“CBS. Soft News Hard”

There are a couple interesting posts about TV news at The Corner today.

Peter Suderman recounts Sean McManus‘ “biggest lesson” of the new CBS Evening News — that “people basically want you to tell them what happened in the world that day” — and mocks it: “When you’ve got guys like this getting paid seven figures to run network news divisions, it’s a wonder they’ve managed to stay on the air at all.”

Mark Steyn suggests that CBS viewers “want the conceit maintained.” He says: “The CBS viewer (I use the singular advisedly) wants his lifestyle features with a veneer of gravitas. If I were the news division president, my motto would be: ‘CBS. Soft News Hard.'”
