CBS News SVP on Checkbook Journalism: ‘It’s Out of the Bottle’

By Chris Ariens

The AP’s David Bauder highlights the latest incidents of checkbook journalism, two of which happened over the holidays: NBC News chartering a Brazil-to-U.S. flight for David and Sean Goldman and CNN and ABC paying for cell phone images of the underwear bomber and an interview with the hero who stopped the attack in its tracks.

Paul Friedman, who’s worked at NBC News, ABC News and is now Senior VP at CBS News says get used to this kind of journalism. “If we all drew a line again, maybe we could stop this,” Friedman tells Bauder. “But that’s probably hopelessly naive. It’s out of the bottle.”
