CBS News has announced a significant hire this morning, naming Jay Shaylor executive producer of the CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell.
The Washington-based Shaylor will take the reins from CBS News evp of news Kim Godwin next month, as the newscast moves to the nation’s capital.
O’Donnell took on Evening News anchor duties beginning July 15, and Godwin has been serving as “launch ep” while the newscast originated from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York.
“Jay is the right person at the right time to lead this important CBS News franchise,” says CBS News president Susan Zirinsky. “We are building a broadcast that is focused on thoughtful reporting with impact and depth and are thrilled to have an executive producer who shares our collective passion for journalism.”
Many TV newsers know Shaylor as Wolf Blitzer‘s executive producer on The Situation Room since 2013, CNN’s flagship two-hour daily newscast covering breaking news, national security, international events and politics. Shaylor has been in the control room leading live coverage of many of the biggest breaking news stories of the last six years—from the San Bernardino terror attacks to the firing of James Comey. In addition to supervising daily coverage and breaking news, he was part of the team that produced CNN’s election nights and special events. During his tenure, his team was nominated for seven Emmys.
Before joining CNN in 2013, Shaylor was the senior producer of GMA, overseeing editorial content and production of the broadcast during the evening and overnight hours.
In 2012, he was part of the senior team responsible for moving GMA into the No. 1 spot in total viewers. He also served as one of Diane Sawyer’s anchor producers, and was the morning show’s primary producer in the field during breaking news.

Shaylor begins next month.
