Bridge Collapse: Couric, Williams, Gibson In (And Over) Minneapolis

By Chris Ariens

Charlie Gibson began World News tonight flying over what’s left of the 35W bridge. “Welcome to ‘World News.’ Tonight, from Minneapolis, and specifically right now, over the collapse of the interstate 35W bridge.” Reports from Dan Harris, Lisa Stark and Mike Von Fremd, followed.

Brian Williams was the first of the evening news anchors on the air, in Minneapolis this morning (alongside Matt Lauer at 7:22am). Nightly News led with a report from new hire, Chicago-based correspondent Lee Cowan who Williams noted “was among the first members of our team to get here.”

Of the three broadcast show opens The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric stood out as the one filled with the most emotion. Soundbites from witnesses, “…what I heard was lots of screaming children, or children that are breathing and didn’t have the energy to scream… if you’re okay, please call me… we just want her home; intertwined with voiceover from Couric: “Tonight, the search for victims and answers.”
