Blizzard Powers Weather Channel Ratings Over the Weekend

By Alex Weprin

TVNewser already posted the cable news ratings from the holiday weekend, but there was one key news network left off the list.

The Weather Channel was a top network this weekend in both total viewers and the demo, thanks to the powerful blizzard that slammed the east coast of the U.S.

All told, 45 million people tuned into the network December 25-26, though that is a cume figure, which has little significance to advertisers. Not surprisingly, the network had its strongest performance during the day, when people were checking to see on the status of the storm, as well as how it affected travel.

The network peaked on Saturday at 11 AM, drawing 1.038 million total viewers, and on Sunday at 10 AM, drawing 1.156 million total viewers. That beat MSNBC and CNN, though it fell a bit short of FNC in those hours.

Weather’s total day performance on Sunday was its best this year in the adults 25-54 demo, and was number one in total day on Sunday, beating FNC, MSNBC, and CNN.
