Blitzer, Russert Attend Audience with Pope Benedict

Wolf Blitzer and Tim Russert were invited to participate in a private audience of just 10 people with Pope Benedict XVI this afternoon. The audience took place on the campus of Catholic University late this afternoon. “Here we have two Buffalo boys meeting with Pope Benedict XVI,” said Blitzer on CNN just after the meeting.

“I must say, I don’t often say it, but I truly feel blessed that I had this opportunity to do what I’ve just done,” said Blitzer to CNN’s John King who was sub-anchoring the Situation Room while Blitzer was at the University.

King said, “Pope Benedict may be the only man alive who could be in a room with Blitzer and Russert and not get asked a question.”

“You know, I didn’t ask him a question, and I listened carefully and Tim Russert, if you can believe it, was even more polite and even more stunned and silent than I was,” Blitzer said, adding, “I think the two of us did not embarrass our profession, our news business. We just stood there and we watched, we did what we were told.”
