Barbara Walters: $100 Million Matchmaker

David Geffen, founder of Geffen Records and the “G” in Dreamworks SKG is about to pony up $100 million dollars for renovations to Lincoln Center. For that cool sum, his name will replace Avery Fisher’s on the concert hall that is the home of the New York Philharmonic.

But it might not have happened if not for ABC’s Barbara Walters. As the New York Times reports today:

Ms. Walters had introduced her friend Mr. Geffen, a Hollywood billionaire seeking to turn his philanthropic attention to New York, to her friend Katherine Farley, Lincoln Center’s chairwoman. “I thought that it would be a great match,” Ms. Walters said, “because David has such vision and he gives so much money everywhere to different things.”

“You could say I was the matchmaker,” Walters said.
